about

'Be There If I have to Swim'- Niall Connnolly and Karl Nesbitt Live at the Crane Bar , June 12th 2008

These songs were recorded in one night towards the end of extensive and exhausting European tour with my very good friend and musical companion, Karl Nesbitt. At this point in the tour I'd already had my wallet stolen, gotten food poisoning twice, seen a poet head-butt a thief, hitchhiked a train and had my wallet anonymously returned in the post. I'd played basements, balconies, bookshops, embassies and theatres. I'd just returned from the Prague Fringe Festival and was about to play Glastonbury. It felt like as good time as any to make a live album.

Here it is, a selection of songs from each of my three studio albums alongside six previously unreleased songs. It's always an honour for me to be accompanied by such a fluent musician as Karl. My former flatmate, and friend, Billy Ramsell, once described my working relationship with Karl as being akin to an open marriage. We don't get to play together so much these days but when we do, it's as comfortable as falling into conversation with an old friend.

To everyone who's ever made a phone call, a bed, a meal, a suggestion, a mix tape, a detour or a night of it, on my behalf. Thank you. You are keeping me afloat. If you think I am talking about you, I am.

Come on in, we've saved you a seat at the bar,
Thanks for listening,
Niall Connolly
